Los Angeles Kings win 3-2 against the San Jose Sharks after overtime
The final game of Wednesday was played at the Staples Arena with the home team, Los Angeles Kings up against the San Jose Sharks. This was the 750th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series which saw both teams playing the 50th
game of their respective season.
Los Angeles Kings were trailing as the final period started by managed to level the scores as regulation time ended. The match went into overtime but no goals were scored there. However, Los Angeles managed to emerge as 3-2 winners of the match after scoring
in the shootout. Jack Johnson, defenseman of the Los Angeles Kings was named the star selection of the match for his brilliance in defence and stopping attacks till the very end of the match.
Both teams made slow start to the match with the Los Angeles Kings making the early shots. Their passing was brilliant early on added to which was some excellent shooting. The away side also managed to come up with a few shots on goal but they weren’t as
threatening as the shots by the Kings.
The middle part of the period was dominated by defences of both teams. However, the game took pace once again as the match neared its end. Both teams made goal attempts once again regularly threatening the goal. Nonetheless, no goals were scored during the
period and the scores were level on 0-0 as the teams went into the break. During the course of the period Kings made 6 goal attempts while San Jose Sharks made 8 goal attempts.
The second period saw both teams come out strong and attacking right from the start. It took some time for the first goal of the match to be scored but was finally scored by the Los Angeles Kings in the 14th minute. The goal came as a result of
a brilliant flick shot by Ryan Smyth.
The lead didn’t last long as the San Jose Sharks managed to level the scores with a goal through Ryane Clowe in the 16th minute. The game was being played very fast with the puck going to and fro on the pitch. The home crowd was silenced as the
Sharks scored through Devin Setoguchi in the 17th minute to get into the lead once again. The period saw both teams making a few more goal attempts but unfortunately no more goals were scored.
San Jose Sharks led 2-1 going into the final period with both teams making 8 goal attempts each during the course of the second period.
The final period didn’t see much happening with the Sharks making a few strong attacks at the start of the period. Despite the strong defence of the Sharks, Los Angeles Kings managed to score in the 6th minute through Alexei Ponikarovsky from
a brilliant backhand shot to level the scores.
This is how it remained till the end of the period and the scores were level on 2-2 at the end of regulation time. The match went into overtime but no goals were scored. However, it was Los Angeles Kings who won the match 3-2 in the end with Jarret Stoll
scoring the only goal during shootout for the Kings.
