Los Angeles Lakers Shannon Brown is ready to miss the next NBA season – Labour Dispute Update
We are 109 days into the NBA lockout and the NBA and players unions are still at loggerheads over the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The first two weeks of regular season have already been cancelled and the probability of
whole season getting terminated is aggrandizing with every passing day.
In the last week, the calls for both sides to converge to an agreement have been increasing. Fans and most of the players want the issue to be resolved at the earliest. However, there are some players, who have already made their
mind for a whole season cancellation if the NBA owners don’t accede to the players demands.
Los Angeles Lakers’ Shannon Brown, who became a free agent after last season, is one of those players.
The 6 ft 4 player has admitted that he is ready to fence-sit a whole season if NBA maintains its rigid stance. Talking to ESPN, he said
"I think we (players) are (prepared to miss the season. We don't want to though. We're prepared, but we don't want to. We're a family. If a guy is hurting (financially) and a guy needs to reach out to somebody, I think that person
will be there for him to help them get over the hump that they need to get over until this thing is over".
He added, "We don't want to get taken advantage of, to put it very blunt. We don't want to feel like we're out there basically giving our services, giving our bodies, giving our time, being away from our families and all of that
stuff being taken advantage of and we're not reaping any benefits from it”.
The 25 year old guard from Lakers had a good season last time around and managed to end up with a career high average of 8.7 points per game. After his five years contract, which earned him humble $7.1 million with the Los Angeles
Lakers, he backed out of an extension that would have guaranteed him $2.4 million this coming season. Los Angeles Lakers were expecting this move from Shannon and for this reason; they roped in two guards in June’s draft.
Shannon can always sign a new contract once the labour dispute ends and league’s free agency period commences. As of now, the players are losing approximately $170 million for every two weeks of season which are cancelled. However,
according to Brown, they are all united behind the union.
