Los Angeles Lakers interested in acquiring Gilbert Arenas - NBA Update
The 30 years old Gilbert Arenas- the first victim of the amnesty clause this season - is a free agent at the moment after he cleared his waivers earlier in January. He has been away from basketball for quite a while but maybe in
the coming days, he will be on the court again, in a Los Angeles Lakers jersey playing alongside the likes of Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum.
Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike Brown has enquired about Arenas availability and has shown interest in acquiring him to strengthen the backcourt of the team. But it is still early days and no final decision has been made yet, as
Brown, talking to ESPN said.
"We've made a call on (him), yes," Brown said. "We've called to see what his status is. That's it." "I have not talked to him, I have not watched any tape on him. It's really just conversation, We've had conversation about a lot
of players. There are a ton of players out there that we've had conversation about."
The Los Angeles Lakers have not looked as strong this season as they usually are. Except Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, no one else has set the court ablaze, and even Pau and Bynum are not exactly at Kobe’s level.
Injury to point guard Steve Blake and the departure of Lamar Odom have also made things worse for them.
They desperately need a seasoned campaigner like Arenas, who can provide some quality minutes to the Lakers when kobe goes on the bench. This will take some pressure of Kobe's shoulders and will strengthen the offense of the team.
Gilbert is an outstanding athlete and although he is past his prime now, he still has the skills that Lakers could make good use off.
After starting his NBA career with Golden State Warriors in 2001-02, he was traded to Washington Wizards. In his first four years with the team, he had already established himself as one of the best players in the Wizards by showing
his excellent basketball skills and by leading the team to memorable wins.
Unfortunately in the next few years his graph started declining, mainly because of injuries and disciplinary issues which kept him out of many games.
Anyway, he is a class act and still has a lot of basketball left in him so, whenever he makes a comeback, it will be a solid one.
