Los Angeles Lakers star Andrew Bynum’s injury not serious – NBA Update
Los Angeles Lakers fans will be relieved to find out that the injury sustained by centre Andrew Bynum is not as serious as originally feared.
The Lakers centre was injured in his side’s recent encounter with the Golden State Warriors. Bynum was taken out of the game and did not return; raising fears among supporters and players alike of a serious setback.
The Lakers though have now eased those fears, saying that the player will be treated on a day to day basis. He twisted his ankle after an awkward landing on a teammate's foot in the game against the Warriors, but Los Angeles have not had a follow up MRI
taken.
His X-Rays came out negative, and the player received treatment from Gary Vitti, the team’s athletic trainer.
Bynum has been suspect to injuries ever since he started his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, but this year has been different. The player, who has routinely missed large parts of the last many years due to injury, has largely been free of such problems
this NBA season.
In fact, his comparatively injury free run in the Lakers side has helped his development as a player, and elevate his game as well as status within the time. Gone are the days when Bynum was just a defensive workhorse for Los Angeles.
Today, Bynum is involved in much of the offense, and has established himself as one of the best centres in the NBA. The development in his game has not gone unnoticed either, with the bulky big man getting his first All-Star call.
Legendary teammate Kobe Bryant has also been impressed with Bynum this season, and remarked how he has added to his game.
"He's gotten better," said Kobe Bryant. "You see him working on his footwork a lot, he has a lot of moves in his arsenal that he didn't have before. He's much more comfortable doing it and he's gained a great deal of confidence."
Bynum has now surpassed star power forward Pau Gasol in terms of importance for the team, his season averages of 18.3 points and 12.1 rebounds a testament to that fact. In fact, he is now rivalling Kobe Bryant as the most important cog in the Lakers machine.
Bynum’s strength, defensive presence and ability to work the post are something that adds a whole other dimension to the Los Angeles Lakers, something that they need in order to challenge the best in the business. Kobe Bryant knows that, but he thinks the
Lakers can carry on for the time being.
"I don't think it's a championship formula, but we can for the time being," he said. "(Ramon) Sessions is one of those players who can carry a game offensively, he's a great scorer. And Pau (Gasol) can obviously do what he does."
