Los Angeles Lakers’ superstar Kobe Bryant fined $100,000
The Los Angeles Lakers’ superstar Kobe Bryant has been found guilty for a homophobic slur at referee, Bennie Adams, which was clearly against the g*y community in the United States of America.
Bryant was fined $100,000 by the National Basketball Association (NBA) Commissioner David Stern, who particularly called Bryant’s gesture, as very “offensive and inexcusable”.
In the match against the San Antonio Spurs on April 13, 2011, Kobe received a technical foul from referee, Bennie Adams, and stormed off the court and on to the bench. First he punched the chair and threw his towel away. The very next moment he yelled at
referee “Bennie” and called him a "f****t” to demonstrate his frustration.
Kobe issued a statement in which he tried to explain his motive towards this particular act. Bryant said:
“What I said last night should not be taken literally, my actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period. The words expressed do not reflect my feelings towards the g*y and L*****n communities and were not meant to offend anyone The
comment that I made, even though it wasn't meant in the way it was perceived to be, is nonetheless wrong, so it's important to own that”.
NBA Commissioner David Stern is very authoritarian when it comes to rules and regulation and on this occasion he too strongly spoke out against Bryant’s slur, as he quickly took action and fined Bryant $100,000.
He further said it is not at-all acceptable to anyone, who directly, or, indirectly was involved with the NBA to make such kind of insulting comments.
Stern's quick action was praised by several g*y rights organisations especially, Joe Solmonese, the president of Human Rights Campaign on L*****n, g*y, bisexual, and, transgender, civil rights organization.
Joe also demanded a precise apology from Kobe Bryant. Soon the Lakers’ Bryant realised his offense, as he met with Solmonese the very next day to apologize for his disturbing acts.
Basketball is a worldwide sport now and its professional players need to set an example for upcoming players and fans.
