On Tuesday night at Staples Center, DeLisha Milton Jones scored 12 points on 5 for 10 shooting from the field as Los Angeles Sparks led Atlanta Dream 39-37 at halftime.
Milton-Jones also grabbed two rebounds, dished out two assists and blocked one shot in more than 16 minutes of action. Tina Thompson had seven points, three steals and two rebounds for Los Angeles while Candace Parker came off
the bench with five points, five rebounds and two assists for the Sparks, who have won just three of their previous 10 games.
Armintie Price headed Dream with nine points, shooting 4 for 5 from the floor, and five boards. Lindsey Harding had eight points, two assists and two rebounds for Atlanta. Erika de Souza totalled six points and six rebounds for
Dream, who are fourth in the Eastern Conference with an 11-12 record so far.
Atlanta shot 51.5 percent (17 for 33) from the floor and 37.5 percent (3 for 8) from the line. Dream did not attempt even a single shot beyond the arc. Los Angeles on the other hand, shot 42.1 percent (16 for 38) from the field,
including 33.3 percent (4 for 12) from three-point range, and 100 percent (3 for 3) from free throw line. Sparks dished out 14 assists as compared to just six by the visiting team. Additionally, Los Angeles committed just nine turnovers as compared to 12 by
Atlanta.
First Quarter
Los Angeles played well early in the first quarter and held a 12-8 lead at the midway mark. Price made a driving lay-up shot to cut the margin to two points, 12-10, but Thompson responded with jumper and a lay-up to push the Sparks’
lead to six points, 16-10, with 02:40 remaining in the first period.
Dream then racked up six unanswered points and tied the game at 16. Noelle Quinn however hit a three with 01:13 to go in the quarter as Los Angeles carried a 19-16 advantage into the second period.
Second Quarter
Atlanta tied the game at 21-21 early in the second quarter. Sparks dominated the period after that and went on an 18-11 run to carry a 39-32 lead with just 45 seconds to go in the first half. Dream pulled back though and scored
five consecutive points in the 34 seconds of the quarter and trimmed their deficit to just two, 39-37, at halftime.
