Los Angeles Sparks and Connecticut Sun secure a place in the second round – WNBA Playoffs Update September 29th
The playoffs are on their way in the WNBA with both conferences being treated to some spectacular first round matchups. On Saturday night, Los Angeles Sparks took to court against the San Antonio Silver Stars in Game 2 looking to wrap their series up and move to the next round. They did exactly that. Connecticut Sun were looking to achieve a similar result as they went over to the Prudential Centre to take on New York Liberty in Game 2 of their respective series and heading up to the next round.
1. Los Angeles Sparks versus the San Antonio Silver Stars
The first matchup of the night saw these two Western Conference powerhouses take on each other in Game 2 at the AT&T Center. The Texans had beaten the Hollywood side, the last time these two took each other on in the playoffs. Candace Parker was having none of that this time around. After playing a vital role in the Game 1 win, she again stood up to produce a scintillating performance of 32 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists and helped the Sparks close out the series against the Silver Stars with a score line of 101-94
Parker was not un-assisted on the night as Kristi Toliver also showed up with spectacular form to produce 23 points. Alana Beard had a good game with 17 points while DeLisha Milton-Jones also chipped in with 10 points.
Sophia Young carried the San Antonio charge with 28 points and Becky Hammon provided equal support by racking up 15 of her own.
2. Connecticut Sun versus New York Liberty
While the Sparks became the first team out of the Western Conference to make it into the second round, Eastern Conference’s Connecticut Sun were not far behind as they defeated New York Liberty 75-62 to win their respective series 2-0.
Tina Charles rose to the occasion with a spectacular double-double performance of 25 points and 14 rebounds while Asjha Jones also played well for 20 points and 8 rebounds. Cappie Pondexter contributed 20 points to lead the scoring for Liberty while Kara Braxton chipped in with 10 of her own. However, they were let down by the remaining players on the roster as none of them managed to get into double figures.
