The Los Angeles Sparks finally emerged out of the tailspin on Saturday night at Allstate Arena. All it took was DeLisha Milton-Jones stepping up and scoring a game high 19 points, including a pair of clinching free throws, as Los
Angeles held off Chicago Sky 88-84 and snapped their four-game losing streak.
Milton-Jones also had four rebounds and two steals in the victory. She shot 6 for 10 from the field, including 2 for 4 from three-point range, and 5 for 7 from free throw line. Tina Thompson scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds
and dished out three assists for Los Angeles. Thompson hit 5 for 9 from the floor and made 4 for 8 three-pointers.
Jantel Lavender came off the bench with 13 points and six rebounds while Kristi Toliver added 12 points and five assists for Sparks, who have won just three of their previous 12 games. Noelle Quinn tallied also 10 points for Los
Angeles.
Erin Thorn led Chicago with 17 points off the bench. Epiphanny Prince contributed 16 points, five assists and five steals in the losing effort. Sylvia Fowles also scored 16 points in the loss and grabbed nine rebounds.
Los Angeles shot 56.4 percent (31 for 55) from the floor and 90 percent (18 for 20) from free throw line whereas Sky shot 46.5 percent (33 for 71) from the field and 80 percent (8 for 10) from the line. The Sparks committed 16
turnovers as compared to just eight by Chicago.
Milton-Jones and Toliver scored six of their points in the first quarter as Los Angeles carried a five-point lead, 24-19, into the second. In the second quarter, Sparks used their size and superior defence to maintain their hold
on the game. Los Angeles outscored Chicago 27-16 in the second period and stretched their lead to 16 points, 51-35, at halftime.
Sky bounced back after the break and limited Sparks to 15 points in the third quarter, trimming their deficit to eight, 66-58, heading into the last period.
Sky continued their surge in the fourth quarter and pulled within two, 84-82, with 20 seconds to go. However, Milton-Jones and Quinn responded with a pair of free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for the Sparks.
