Question:

Los Cabos Mexico?

Has anyone stayed here on vacation? I plan to stay at the Hilton Grand vacation resort and was wondering:

How do you get around? Can you rent a car or is there a lot of public transportation? I also want to see the countryside and go birdwatching while I am there; but I'm worried about driving in Mexico.

Are there many places to walk to?

What is the weather like in August?

Any tips or advice about anything?

  1. Taxi cabs are plentiful and fairly inexpensive so we never rented a car, however using for seeing the countryside or birdwatching, that may get a little costly.

I was told by a friend when he rented a car to be sure to comb over the entire vehicle very closely for any small scratches and/or nicks- these can also be "hidden" scratches as well, and make sure they are noted for on the contract. You can (or will) be charged for them. He had to pay 4500 pesos for a scratch that he felt may have been originally concealed by matching colored lipstick or something, which became exposed when washed off. He swears the scratch wasn't there when he checked the car that morning prior to dropping it off....Not all are dishonest, but be aware. But remember that you will basically have to pay, as he did, when it's their word against yours.

I also remember reading some stories on-line where the rental cars stand out for the mexican police, and they can pull you over and demand small "fees" for something you may or haven't done.

Not trying to scare you or anything because for every bad/negative story, I'm sure there are a hundred  others that came out positive. You'll be fine!

    Have fun!

  2. I would rent a car. I went there on january and it is kinda hard and expensive to get transportation to the good places especially when you want to travel around! Be sure to check EVERY option when you arrive at the airport, you will see like 7 or 8 stands from different companies, check all and do not feel pressured to rent from any of them, the first two I checked where about 5000 pesos/week, the third one gave me a nicer car for 3500 pesos/week, and also check the car with them and mention any scratch or defect you see, they will write it down. There are not many places to walk to from the Hilton, that's why you should rent a car. The weather is very nice, it's hot in august. Don't accept timeshare presentations for a lower car-rental price, pay it full and then go to the marina, the timeshares people will offer you a lot of more things there if you go to a presentation, I got like 700US in tours for 4 people!

  3. I've stayed at the Hilton in late June 2003. It is absolutely gorgeous! Every single day the weather was in the low 80s with barely any clouds! Though I barely left the resort, we did take public transportation to Los Cabos for dinner and shopping. Don't forget to never accept the price on something, you have to bargain with them and usually get a cheaper price. Cabo del Sol is the most beautiful golf club that I've ever been to! So, if you golf, definetely make a point to go there!
