What exactly does a loss adjuster do ?

We have one coming out for an insurance claim having already had another insurance person out to evaluate our claim.

We wern't happy after the first visit so they are now sending this "Loss Adjuster" to see us, so i was just interested to know what the difference was?

Thanks in advance.

  1. The loss adjuster is appointed by the Insurance Company to handle the claim on THEIR behalf. They are NOT independent.

A loss adjuster (eg.. Cunningham Lindsey) is the opposite of a claims assessor (eg. AJC Consultants). An assessor can be appointed by YOU, the policyholder, to act on YOUR behalf and obtain for you the highest possible settlement.

  2. He will be an independant assessor who will give an impartial valuation on your claim.

  3. They will be paid by the insurer but I do not know if you get a copy of the report so if the damage is great it may be an idea after some thought to appoint your own loss adjuster to negotiate on your behalf. They at least understand the policy and the law behind it better than you do and he should save at least his fee. If it is a small claim it may not be worth it

  4. The first person to have been to see you will probably have been a representative of the insurers. The loss adjuster will be either have been appointed from within the insurers (an internal loss adjuster - they do exist) or they may be a third-party loss adjuster. They will assess the damage and report back to the insurers who will make a decision how to proceed based on the report. The insurers can choose to take into consideration the contents of the report or could even completely disregard it - the report is to enable them to make a decision.
