my mum had tonsillitis about 2 weeks ago. she took penicillin, and after about a week all her symptoms cleared up, except now she has trouble hearing. she says it sounds very muffled, and is annoying her. she called her doctor, but the next appointment isn't soon enough. so she phoned up nhs direct, and they didn't know what to recommend. has anyone suffered from this, and if so, what did you do? will she just have to wait it out? thanks for any help xx

  1. Did your mother finish off her antibiotics?  My first guess would be that she developed an inner ear infection, which would cause her to have trouble hearing and make sounds muffled.  Make sure she finishes her antibiotics, and keep plenty of fluids in her body.

  2. I would tend to try and get an appointment with the practise nurse or get your local community pharmacist to have a look inside the ears in case there is any impacted wax there alternatively seeking the pharmacist advice on possible use of decongestants..

It is not uncommon after a throat infection to have some blockage in the eustachian tubes.. As long as he balance is ok then I'm sure it will sort itself out within a few weeks

  3. There are some drugs that can have this effect. If it doesn't clear up pretty soon, I would ask to see a specialist.
