Question:

Lost Dmv title/bill of sale?

I bought a car and paid for it in cash and the title was signed over to me. I recently moved and lost the title and bill of sale where they were signed over to me before I could take them to the DMV and have the title put in my n ame and have a tag issued and all of that. What can I do now to get my car registered? I bought the car from a dealership, so could I go there and get another bill of sale or something? I know that I can't get the title again since they signed it over to me, but what can I do to get the car in my name and get it registered?

  1. If you absolutely can not find the signed title, you will have to contact the dealership and pay for them to get a duplicate title for the car.  That will be your only option, and it may take some time.

  2. Yes, call the dealership.  They can either give you a copy of the original BOS or issue a new one for that date.  They could possibly give you a paper copy of the title, but what you may need to have them do is apply for a duplicate title (an official copy of the last title they gave you) so that you can register the car.
