Lost book. Hi there, I let my girlfriend use my Janome 1600P quilting machine, she has misplaced

Hi there, I let my girlfriend use my Janome 1600P quilting machine, she has misplaced the book. I am in SC and she and the machine are in NH, all I need to know is what side the flat side of the needle goes against. She cannot get it to pick up the bottom thread, so I think she has the needle in wrong.
