How would you handle a dog with puppies?

There is a dog that has had 8 puppies across the street from my home. She had them under someones shed. The people know and they feed and give her water. Now she just roams around the area and still takes care of them. Now I groom and take care of her more then anyone else. I wish I was able to take her. But they people that have the shed said that they want to have her there but dont want to tie her up or pin the pups. Let me note that the main road is 30 feet from the shed. A busy road at that.

Now would you think that it would be better if I called the shelter to come get them?

The pups and mom need a good home and not be running around the streets.

She is a great dog and it looks that someone dropped her off once knowing she was having pups.

What would you do?

  1. I would first call a no-kill shelter and explain the situation. Ask them if it's ok living conditions or if they should come get the dog and her pups. An example of a shelter you should call is Paws Chicago. Go to www.pawschicago.org. The shelter you call should have information on the needs of these dogs.

  2. Why wait until one of them is hit.  Your instincts are good.  Call the shelter and tell the what's happening.  They'll do the right thing.  Then you can go to the shelter and adopt.  I adopted a 2 year old poodle a couple of months ago.  So glad I did.  You will be too.

    Good Luck

  3. I'd contact a local animal welfare agency. She needs healthcare, and she definitely needs to be spayed! This is such a difficult question because so many places are just overwhelmed with the number of animals they already have. Very sad=( Keep trying to help her though...don't ever give up on animals!!!

  4. Try to find a no-kill shelter in your area.  It's actually VERY important that this female dog (funny how you cannot use the "B" word when you should be able to, huh?) and her puppies be taken to a shelter.

Almost always, females with puppies are taken in to a private home, by someone who volunteers to help shelter animals.

The mama dog needs proper food, to have enough milk for her puppies.  The puppies need to be checked for ticks, and fleas, which can actually feast on little puppies so much they kill them.  The puppies need to be handled EVERY DAY, several times a day by humans, so they will be properly socialized.  Those puppies will be tottering about and leaving the den by the time they are six weeks old.  By the time they are 8 weeks old, they will be out in the road, being hit by cars.

Call a shelter, ASAP, and have her picked up with her puppies.  They will have a MUCH better chance at having healthy, happy lives, than they do growing up under a shed.
