  1. Not every state or city allows such donations, because its perishable food and, therefore, if it hasn't been preserved appropriately, it could make people sick. So you need to check your local laws. Also, some cultures find the idea of eating leftover food from others as degrading, no matter how poor or hungry a person might be -- so be culturally sensitive.

That said, when I lived in Austin, Texas, I make sure that for any community event I organize that I have plenty of aluminum foil to wrap up remaining food properly, and I called the local women's shelter when we were done and, if they wanted the food, I dropped the food off there. If they didn't, the event organizers took the leftovers themselves.

  2. There's almost no hope here. Legally, most public venues for food, including corporate environnments sponsoring consumables of any gastronomic kind, have a higher responsibility to throw it all out and stay secure than to give away used food and invite trouble that way.

We throw food out for the same reasons we do most everything else in this country: because we can and because we can't take the chance not to.

  3. Good idea.  In India, we are doing this while a church prayer meeting, marriages, etc.  We are planning to give the food to the orphanages, home for the old, etc.

  4. Try connecting the party givers with a local food pantry.
