Lothar Matthaus is the new Bulgaria coach
Lothar Matthaus has been named as Bulgaria’s new national team coach. The Bulgarian Football Union President Borislav Mihaylov said the former German star will be unveiled as the new Bulgarian manager within the next few days. The contract will give Matthaus
one year with the option of a further two years. Matthaus was the manager of Hungary in 2004 and 2005. He has also managed Rapid Vienna in Austria. Mihaylov believes that Matthaus can change the national team’s fortunes around and said, “We need a foreign
coach with a strong background whom the players will respect.”
Bulgaria has had a terrible start to their campaign. They lost to England 4-0 at Wembley and in the following match they were defeated at home by Montenegro. The result meant that the then manger Stanimir Stoilov resigned from his post as the Bulgaria manager.
Bulgaria are bottom of the group and after only two matches qualification for the European Championship looks beyond them.
Lothar Matthaus will no longer have the services of Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov who retired from international football. Matthaus played a record 150 times for Germany and captained them to the World Cup in 1990. He was given the accolade
of FIFA World player of the year in 1991. Matthaus played his club football with Borussia Monchengladbach and then played for Bayern Munich in two separate stints in the club amounting 305 caps. He also played in Italy with Inter Milan. As a manager Matthaus
has coached all over the World. He started his career with Rapid Vienna, but has coached Serbian side Partisan Belgrade, Brazilian side Atletico Paranaense, Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and Israeli side Maccabi Netenya in 2008/2009 which was his last managerial
job. Matthaus will lead Bulgaria in his first match as manager on October 8th against Wales in Group G.
