Question:

Lots of questions about moving to Australia?

All my uni courses are in NSW, but I have never lived in Australia (yes, I am Australian, but I grew up in Canada, eh).

Anyway the situation now is that I need to stay there for some residency requirements. Most my my relatives live between Sydney and Newcastle so this is where I want to live. In all likelihood I will not leave :)

Here are a few questions to start:

1) work. looking for a decent job with a decent salary. how are opportunities between Sydney and Newcastle?

2) bring family over with me... I'm of Danish/Irish blood. My wife is Japanese. We have 3 daughters. Sometimes we have problems with racism in Japan (i.e. my kids are considered 'half' kids... pffft 'sif anyone could be a half-person!). How likely is this problem to surface in Australia?

3) accommodation. very expensive - any advice on finding a decent place to live?

I love Australia and have visited several times. I've always wanted to live there! Any help appreciated!

Regards,

TWBH

  1. Go to Newcastle, your Wife and Kids will experience a beautiful sea side family town that is big enough and close enough to Sydney for you to drive to yet not suffer the rents and the hype and the busy busy while you adjust, I think the half person thing is weird! the most you will get over here is 'Dad is Danish and Mum is Japanese" but you know what, over here it will just be a description of your children's parentage if anybody ever bothers to ask, it won't ever be a big deal as Australia is made up of everybody from everywhere.  I am first generation Australian born on my mothers side, Scottish, and my father was born here after WW2 with his parents fleeing from Lithuania, my kids father is Greek/German/Dutch, my neighbours on one side are Pacific Islanders via New Zealand and the couple over the road, Wife, English, Husband Scottish, next to them, Wife German/Irish 1st generation born Australian, her Husband, Mother Swedish, father English, the ladies at the local vegetable shop are Lebanese, I live in Brisbane but all cities in Australia are about the same, I am just thinking about the 'nature part' when I suggest Newcastle over Sydney and I wish you good luck!.

  2. 1) It depends, so I can't really answer.

    2) I am in year 10 at school and we have at least 10 Asian kids in our classes. Plus, to be honest, nobody cares! This never happens!!!!!!! My best friend is half Vietnamese and she has NEVER ever gotten teased about it! So there is no need to worry about that question!

    3) The accommodation differs from suburb to suburb. If you want a sense of community that prices in the middle price range try the suburb Clovelly, it's in the Eastern Suburbs. If you're on a budget - try Maroubra (Also in the Eastern Suburbs), if you don't care about the price, I would definitely recommend Paddington - Amazing suburb!

But I would honestly have to recommend Clovelly! Check it out, it's got a beach, wide variety of schools, plenty of stores, and its not a busy/cluttered suburb! It's peaceful and quiet. I lived there until I was 14 when we moved interstate and I miss it sooooooooo much! Great place to be raised!

By the way, everything I have explained is based in Sydney.

Your kids will love it! Oh, and you will definitely ADORE it!

  3. Generally plenty of jobs around, but it depends in what industry/qualification etc.  The Central Coast is between Sydney and Newcastle, you could live there, or otherwise live in Newcastle. Sydney is just so expensive. It all depends on your job of course.

Very little racism, heaps of people are of mixed ethnicity, it's completely normal. (My husband and kids are in this category, my kids have never experienced racism, and my husband only very occasionally from older less educated people).

Others have given you the main job websites - remeber most jobs are not advertised - send out resumes etc.

  4. 1) not many jobs-recession looming

    2) no racism

    3) rental crisis in sydney, houses one of the most expensive in the world

  5. there are various job websites where you can search for jobs in sydney to newcastle and get an estimate of earnings. try

www.seek.com.au alot of jobs on offer tell u the salary when its being advertised.

accommadation isnt very expensive if u go towards newcastle way. its only real expensive when its close to the sydney city cbd.

no we are not racist with halfs. we loooveeeeee halfs here. iam half chinese.. half  french.. some of my friends are halfs 2. they all love it. most people here think its really kool to be mixed and they think you look more attractive if your mixed too. the high skool i went to. there is basically about @ least 10 people each grade that are halfs and thats in the high skool i went to alone.

alot of cpls in aus are asian and aussie cpls. my bfs close friend is aussie and his wife is japanese too. u see them alot in the streets and its very well accepted.
