Lotte Friis earns Women’s 800m freestyle gold: Day two – 2011 European SC Swimming Championships
Lotte Friis of Denmark proved her talent by earning gold medal of Women’s 800m freestyle on second day of the 2011 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Szczecin, Poland on Friday, December 9.
The 23-year-old Friis maintained a prominent lead over her competitors from the start of the race. With her remarkable efforts and commendable strokes, she completed her initial 100 metres of the race in a wonderful time of 57.78 seconds.
She was trailed by Erika Villaecija Garcia of Spain, who remained nearly two seconds slower than Friis and covered the equivalent distance in a time of 59.53 seconds.
The 23-year-old continued her nerve-wrecking performance in the subsequent rounds and ended her first 200 metres of the swim by clocking a time of 1 minute and 58.20 seconds. Villaecija Garcia remained 3.31 seconds slower than her Danish opponent and competed
her first quarter with an effort of 2 minutes and 01.51 seconds.
The battle continued in the subsequent rounds, where Friis ended her first half in a fastest time of 4 minutes and 01.10 seconds. She gained a lead of 4.80 seconds over the 27-year-old Villaecija Garcia, who completed her initial half of the race in a time
of 4 minutes and 05.90 seconds.
Friis continued her smothering efforts in the second half, where she ended her 600 metres of the swim in a top time of 6 minutes and 04.32 seconds. The Spanish competitor was almost two body lengths behind her and covered the equivalent distance in a time
of 6 minutes and 09.49 seconds.
With her dominating efforts, Friis sustained her pace in the final 200 metres of the race and reached the finishing wall with a phenomenal time of 8 minutes and 07.53 seconds for gold medal.
She was followed by Villaecija Garcia, who was almost five second behind and reached the podium for silver medal with a timing of 8 minutes and 12.23 seconds. Spain’s Melanie Costa Schmid ended up third by producing a time of 8 minutes and 16.28 seconds.
Furthermore, the winners were awarded medals after the conclusion of session.
