Lotte Friis pockets Women’s 1500m freestyle final: Day three – 2011 FINA World Championships
Lotte Friis pocketed the gold medal of the Women’s 1500m freestyle on the third day of the ongoing Federation International de Natation (FINA) organised 2011 World Long Course Championships on Tuesday, July 26, in Shanghai, China.
Friis of Denmark captured the gold medal of the distant freestyle swim in a phenomenal time of 15 minutes and 49.59 seconds. Her time was nearly seven seconds away from the world record of 15 minutes and 42.54 seconds, made by Kate Ziegler of USA in 2007.
Her time was also 4.66 seconds behind the championship record of 15 minutes and 44.93 seconds, set by Alessia Filippi of Italy at the 2009 World Championships in Rome.
Friis was followed by world record holder, Ziegler, who failed to defend her title and appeared on the finishing wall after 5.99 seconds. Ziegler clinched the silver medal of the event, by submitting a time of 15 minutes and 55.60 seconds. She was followed
by Li Xuanxu of China, who followed them on the victory stand for the bronze medal, by reporting in a time of 15 minutes and 58.02 seconds.
Moments later, Xuanxu’s team-member, Kristel Kobrich concluded her swim in the fourth fastest place, as she produced a time of 16 minutes and 05.11 seconds. Melissa Gorman of Australia completed her swim in the fifth fastest spot, as she concluded her swim
in a time of 16 minutes and 05.98 seconds. Wendy Trott of South Africa emerged as the sixth position holder, as she clocked a time of 16 minutes and 06.02 seconds.
She was followed by Erika Villaecija Garcia of Spain, who stayed nearly three seconds behind her preceding swimmer and produced a time of 16 minutes and 09.71 seconds. Yiwen Shao was the eighth position holder of the event, as she ended her thirty-lap swim
in a time of 16 minutes and 12.01 seconds.
In addition, the arena appreciated the efforts of all swimmers, while Friis expressed happiness after overwhelming the effort of the crowd’s favourite, Kate Ziegler, in the 1500m event.
