Lotte Friis wins Women’s 200m freestyle gold: Day one – Maria Lenk Trophy, Rio de Janeiro
Lotte Friis of CORINTHIANS/ABDEM won gold medal of the Women’s 200m freestyle on initial day of the 2012 Maria Lenk Trophy in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, April 24.
The 24-year-old Friis demonstrated her forceful efforts in the four-lap freestyle discipline and emerged on the finishing end for gold medal. With her epic start, she smothered all struggles of her challengers in the mediocre distance freestyle event and ensured her top finish on the victory stand.
Her immaculate effort remained prominently ahead of her following swimmer as she touched the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 59.65 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Manuella Lyrio of FIAT/MINAS, who remained 0.62 seconds slower, proved her mettle for second position of the discipline by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 00.27 seconds.
The third spot of the race was secured by Laure Manaudou of ECP/SABESP, who suffered a deficit of 0.16 seconds over her foregoing finisher and emerged on the finishing wall for bronze medal by producing a time of 2 minutes and 00.43 seconds.
In the meantime, the crowd witnessed a forceful effort of CRF/RJ’s Joanna Maranhao, who stayed 0.47 seconds behind her foregoing finisher and settled on the finishing wall for fourth position by producing a time of 2 minutes and 00.90 seconds.
Maranhao was followed by Jessica Bruin Cavalheiro of FFC/RJ, who was just a stroke away from overpowering her former finisher and tapped the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 00.99 seconds for fifth position.
The sixth best spot of the race was secured by Manaudou’s team-member, Larissa Martins Oliveira, who was half a second behind and hit the finishing wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 01.49 seconds.
Oliveira was trailed by Ana Carolina Araujo Santos of CRF/RJ and Isabelle Franca Longo of UNISANTA, who remained prominent for seventh and eighth positions by reporting a time of 2:04.10 and 2:04.41 minutes, respectively.
In addition, the championship will continue for five more days and will conclude on April 29 after the completion of all planned events in Men and Women’s corner.
