Lotus Renault GP driver Robert Kubica may miss 2011 season due to injury – Formula 1 news
Robert Kubica of Lotus Renault GP might miss the 2011 season due to an injured arm. He suffered severe injuries in Ronde di Andora Rally in Italy.
He finished the Valencia test season on a high with the fastest time on the grid and was well on track for the 2011 season.
The accident happened on Sunday when Robert Kubica lost control of his Super 2000 Skoda Fabia and crashed in the wall. He severely injured his right hand and fractured his leg.
His co-driver Jakub Gerber got away unharmed as he explained the whole accident. He said, “We were on the first four kilometers of the first special stage. I was looking at the notes and didn't notice that the car was skidding.”
After the crash, Robert held his arm in pain and after a few moments, he was unconscious. It was just 4.3 km in the race. He was stuck in the car for an hour before the fire fighters cut him out of the wreck. He was than airlifted to Santa Coronav Hospital
in Pietra Ligure.
First hunch about his hand was that he will lose it but then more authentic words came from the surgeon Professor Mario Igor Rossello who, after seven and a half hour long operation, said that his hand was in one piece but it was too early to suggest anything
about him.
Rossello also said that it will take some time for the doctors to determine the functionality of the hand. He suggested that the best time for recovery would be at least one year.
Robert Kubica has previously been involved in some crashes with the worst in 2007 Canadian Grand Prix from which he recovered to compete again. Last season he finished in 8th with a best finish of 2nd position
in the Australian Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso visited him in hospital and said, “Let's all support Robert Kubica, who suffered an accident.” Rubens Barrichello and Timo Glock wished him best of luck as well on their Twitter pages.
His manager Daniele Morelli seemed optimistic as she said, “The important thing is that Robert recoveries, as it has already proven to do with the incident in Canada. On that occasion it took him three months to get back on track.”
One way or another Kubica will miss 2011 season leaving behind two options for drivers, Bruno Senna and Roman Grosjean. However, the team principal said that his attention is more on Kubica rather than on who will be Vitaly Petrov’s teammate this season.
