Lotus Renault GP shortlists three drivers for Robert Kubica’s replacement
After Robert Kubica’s tragic accident during a rally event this weekend, it was revealed that he would not be able to compete in the 2011 Formula 1 season for Lotus Renault GP and he might not be able to race in Formula 1 ever again if his right hand does
not heal fully.
Since Renault needs to sign a new driver for a full season drive at the team for 2011, it was revealed at first that the team was considering Tonio Liuzzi and Nico Hulkenberg as a potential replacement for the Pole. But recently, Renault’s boss Eric Boullier
stated that the names that are being considered are Bruno Senna, Tonio Liuzzi and Nick Heidfeld.
It was believed that the team might approach the 2007 Formula 1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen for the drive but since the Finn is not interested in returning to the sport, it seems that the team will choose one of the three short-listed drivers for the sport.
This means that Eric has ruled out Nico Hulkenberg for the drive, but one has to wonder why they aren’t considering Nico as a competitive contender for the drive? He has definitely proved himself during the 2010 Formula 1 season as he scored a pole position
at a dry Brazilian Grand Prix after scoring a lap which was almost a second faster than the rest of the drivers. Other than that, he scored points consistently in 2010, which was his debut year.
There must be a reason behind this development but all one can do is pray for Robert Kubica at the moment and hope that he recovers as soon as possible and race once again in the sport.
“The team is close to Robert, we wait for him with open arms. It was Robert's choice, he wanted to go rallying at all costs and Renault authorised it. Now we just wait to know what the recovery time is for our driver,” said Boullier.
Nevertheless, the team will use either of its reserve drivers at the second pre-season test session which is expected to take place in Jerez. The fans are waiting for Renault’s decision regarding the replacement for Robert Kubica and it is definitely going
to be a difficult decision for the team.
