Lotus Renault driver Heidfeld hoping to challenge Alonso at the upcoming races – Formula 1 news
Lotus Renault GP driver Nick Heidfeld has said that his target this season is to beat Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso for a fifth place in the drivers’ standings.
Firstly, it was quite surprising when Nick stated that he is hoping to beat Fernando Alonso for a “5th” place in the drivers’ standings. This means that Heidfeld believes that Fernando will finish in 5th place in the drivers’ standings
but that is another debate.
However, Heidfeld has scored just one podium position and by the looks of it, Alonso’s performance is improving while the Renault driver is struggling to perform since the past couple of races. Even at the Monaco Grand Prix, he finished in 8th
place. As a result, he is now 40 points behind the Spaniard.
“I think that right now we're not in the strongest position but on the positive side we still manage to score points and I know that we have learned and understood a lot about the car over the last couple of weeks and there's development coming. It will
not be here this weekend in one go, but I know that we will move forward and hopefully quicker than the others,” said Heidfeld.
Renault scored some pretty good performances in the first two races as both of the team’s drivers scored podium positions in those.
However, he added that overtaking at the Canadian Grand Prix is possible and that the upcoming race is going to be quite interesting.
“I think here in Canada overtaking is possible anyway, and we are obviously working hard - everybody in the team - to improve on all parts; on the car, on qualifying, and looking forward to maximising the potential there as well,” said the Renault driver.
Heidfeld believes that his team should focus on its qualifying pace rather than racing pace as they have been struggling to score some good qualifying laps. Since the past two races, the German driver has been quite disappointing as he started from 15th
and 24th places.
