Lotus driver Romain Grosjean warns against premature presumptions – Formula 1 news
Lotus driver Romain Grosjean has warned against speculations after his fastest lap time set on the second day of the Mugello test.
Lotus has opted to omit Kimi Raikkonen from the Mugello test giving Grosjean a free hand to test the car with the latest updates. The young driver has so far impressed with the best time of the second day. While it seemed that Grosjean will be the fastest
man on the day, Sauber driver Kamui Kobayashi had other plans.
Kobayashi went out of the pits for his final lap of the day and set an identical time to Grosjean. Lotus was predicted to have the potential to challenge the leaders of the grid prior to the season opening. However, the team could not manage to live up to
its billing as a series of unfortunate incidents led the drivers to suffer.
After the Bahrain GP where Raikkonen and Grosjean finished 2nd and 3rd in the race respectively, the team again looks to be on the right track. The Franco-Swiss driver though does not want to his fastest time to be misleading and does not think too much
can be derived from it.
“It's always good to end the day on top, but we have to remember that in testing lap times mean very little,” he said. “Having said that, the car felt great and I was very comfortable from the start. This test gives us an opportunity to try things that we
wouldn't have time to do during a race weekend, so hopefully it'll help us to keep pushing forward.”
He added, “We've done a lot of setup work today, and for sure we'll need to take some time to look through all the data and analyse what we need to focus on tomorrow, but it's a good baseline for the final day.”
It will be interesting to see how the team fares as the season progresses. The team will be weary of Mercedes and Ferrari who look to be clear competitors of Lotus at the moment as all three teams try to displace the leading teams of the season McLaren and
Red Bull.
