Lotus have a chance to win 2012 Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Former Formula 1 driver, Johnny Herbert has said that Lotus have the chance to win 2012 Spanish Grand Prix which is to be held at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona on May 13.
Herbert said that Lotus have been performing quite consistently in the season so far with their pair of drivers, Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean. He added that they performed extremely well in the last race at Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir as
they secured second and third podium finishes.
“The guys that probably have been most consistent this season, strangely enough, are probably Lotus,” he said.
In addition, he said that they have run the car with some major updates in the in-season test held at Mugello circuit last week and have made the essential evaluations regarding the upgrades in order to come up well prepared in the Spanish GP. Moreover,
he said that they can be at the front in the upcoming race.
“Lotus seems to have a car - and the drivers and maybe the engineers as well, have a little bit of understanding about how to get the car in that window. They have shown speed all the way through the season so far. It just clicked together properly in Bahrain.
And so, I think yes [they can win in Spain] and from what we saw in Mugello during testing I think they can move forward in a positive way,” he said.
Nonetheless, he also expressed that nothing can be said for sure about any contender while he said that Red Bull Racing pair of drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber seems to be back on track to defend the team’s championship title.
The British team have come forward as one of the most competitive contenders in this season. Furthermore, they have had a successful pre-season testing programme this year and are currently standing on third place in the constructors’ championship with 57
points.
It will be interesting to mention that the team principal of Lotus, Eric Boullier said during the start of the season that they should not be seen as the second class team anymore as they have got all the potential to fight for the title.
