Lotus reserve driver Karun Chandhok looking for a permanent race seat in future – Formula 1 news
Lotus’ reserve driver Karun Chandhok has showed his interest in getting a permanent race seat in Formula 1 in future.
He said that he wants to drive on the grid as a race driver as he is experienced in all the different aspects of the game.
The Indian driver also mentioned that he would be disappointed if he does not get a chance to drive in the Indian Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 race season. He is hopeful that his team will let him participate in the Delhi Grand Prix, scheduled for later
this year.
Chandhok said that it is his aim to run as a race driver for the 2011 world championship, as every driver has a wish to enjoy some memorable moments in his career.
The 27-year-old driver is currently driving on the grid as a third driver for Lotus-Renault. He even drove in the Friday practice session of Australian Grand Prix for the team.
He became only the second Indian driver in Formula 1 after Narain Karthikeyan, who is currently driving for Hispania Racing Team.
The former HRT driver Chandhok announced his new deal as a reserve driver with Lotus, which made its debut in Formula 1 in 2010. The Indian racing ace said that it was a ‘big step’ for him and he was sure that the team will support him to fulfil his Formula
1 goals.
He said, “It's definitely an opportunity for me to learn from people who are experienced and have won races in the past for other teams. At the moment, it's an interesting time for me to work with Team Lotus. Obviously it's a bit different to last year where
I was a full time race driver.”
He added that he is happy with his stay at Lotus and the team they have.
He further added, “You need to be slightly patient in such kind of situations and my view is that to believe in the medium for long term. Yes, I will back in the F1 as a race driver but this year or next year, we will wait and see.”
Chandhok refused to dwell into his past, when he was in talks with different F1 teams and there was no positive response for him. He said he was at the right team at the moment and did not want to change that.
