Lotus to enter 2011 without KERS
Team Lotus returned to the sport after almost 2 decades but the team was unable to make a strong comeback as they were expecting and as a result, finished at the tail end of the constructors and drivers’ standings alongside Hispania Racing team and Virgin
Racing Team.
The three new teams are given another opportunity as they will be back in 2011 as a part of the Formula 1 grid. However, Lotus has been the most promising team out of the new three teams and one has to give them credit for at least trying their best and
returning to the sport after such a long period. It seems that if they are given some time, they might be able to grow and get back to the top once again.
The team recently announced that they won’t start the 2011 Formula 1 season using KERS (Kinetic Energy Resource System).
According to Mike Gascoyne, the team will not have any new technological devices for 2011 and Tony Fernandes also believes that the team has good reasons for not having KERS in their car for next season. One has to wonder, what is the team really thinking
right now?
“We will have the adjustable rear wing but not KERS for the start of the season - it's in development - really because of engineering resource. Over one lap, it's still not a big plus for its effort, involvement and negatives. Strategically off the start
and in races, then yes,” Gascoyne told the media.
Just like the F-duct, KERS also adds a lot of weight to the car and of course it will not be as easy and efficient as we believe it is for some teams.
“At the start of the year, KERS is not going to be the thing that gives us the step up. It's all the other things, and we've taken the choice to concentrate on all those because if we don't get them right, KERS isn't going to make a difference,” he added.
Nevertheless, Gascoyne seems happy with the team’s decision and he believes that it would be better if they run without KERS. He is expecting good results since Renault are going to be their engine suppliers for 2011 though.
“Renault is very keen on green technologies and KERS, so it's something we will be pushing,” he said.
