Lotus trackside operations director Alan Permane criticises Pirelli tyres for 2013 – Formula 1 News
Lotus trackside operations director, Alan Permane has criticised Pirelli tyres for the 2013 Formula 1 season after facing some difficulties in the Canadian Grand Prix.
Kimi Raikkonen of the Enstone based squad could only score two points at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal after qualifying for 10th grid slot. On the other hand, his teammate, Romain Grosjean could not even make
his way into the second qualifying session and failed to pocket any points in the race as he came 13th.
After a disappointed weekend in Canada, Permane has asserted that it is quite strange to use the same tyres for varying track conditions in different races.
“It's unusual to take the same tyres to Hungary as to Bahrain and Silverstone,” he said. “We didn't have those tyres last year. We had medium and soft last year and people did two stops. So it absolutely doesn't make sense, they're
too hard for that track.”
“They went softer to try to encourage more pit stops. There's no point in them going softer with tyres if they're just going to take different harder tyres everywhere,” he added. "This is exactly what they did in last few races
of last year. They brought harder and harder tyres and we just ended up doing one stop.”
The British squad are currently standing at 4th place in the constructors’ championship with 114 points. Additionally, they are ahead of Force India and behind their major rival, Mercedes.
Meanwhile, Raikkonen is at third position in the drivers’ championship with 88 points. Besides, he is ahead of Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and behind his main competitor, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari. In addition, he has secured one
race victory and three podiums in the season until now.
In contrast, Grosjean is standing at 9th place in the drivers’ championship with 26 points. Moreover, he is ahead of Jenson Button of McLaren and behind Paul di Resta of Force India. He has struggled in most of the races
in the season so far. Nevertheless, he impressed everyone with his amazing performance in the Bahrain GP in which he secured third podium finish after setting off from 11th grid position.
Let’s see how the Finn and the Frenchman perform in the upcoming races.
