Lotus working on solving steering issues after 2012 Monaco Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Lotus technical director, James Allison has said that they are working at their best to solve the steering issues which were faced by their driver, Kimi Raikkonen in 2012 Monaco Grand Prix held at Circuit de Monaco on May 27.
Raikkonen has performed quite convincingly in the season so far as he is currently at sixth position in the drivers’ championship with 51 points. Besides, he is 6 points ahead of Jenson Button of McLaren and 8 points behind Nico Rosberg of Mercedes.
Moreover, he has secured podium finishes in the fourth and fifth grands prix. However, he struggled during the last race in Monte Carlo as he came 9th after starting from 8th grid position.
Nevertheless, Allison has said that they have been making the best of the efforts to provide the most suitable car to the Finnish driver for the Canadian GP.
“Monaco demands a specific steering setup which entails different suspension components to enable sufficient steering lock to be employed,” he said. “In addition, we tried a higher geared steering setup for Kimi. You can't test this in advance so the first
practice session was used to trial this new setup, but it was evident very quickly that it was not suitable. The change takes sufficient time that we had to start immediately in first practice, but he knows the track well. We could also see Romain's pace despite
a lack of F1 experience in Monaco.”
In addition, he said that Montreal circuit is going to be very challenging for all the teams with regard to brake wear. Nonetheless, he said that their car has been fairly well on the brakes and in a very competitive form as they have not faced any major
issues in the season until now.
At present, Lotus are at fourth place in the constructors’ championship with 86 points. Besides, they are 25 points ahead of Mercedes and 22 points behind McLaren.
Over and above, they are trying to make the essential advancements and the necessary preparations so as to improve the pace of their car for the upcoming races in order to fight for the championship title this year.
