Lou Dibella considers Sergio Martinez versus Paul Williams II a boxing remedy
Boxing promoter Lou Dibella is just thankful to be able to do his part to save boxing.
Dibella spoke at a press conference for the upcoming Paul Williams-Sergio Martinez rematch and said that boxing 'needs' fights like this to insure its well-being.
“It [boxing] needs guys like Sergio [Martinez] and Paul Williams. If we don’t have more of this, we’re heading right into the toilet bowl. [...] I’m working in something that I sometimes think might not be around in five years. Boxing needs fights like
this.”
Martinez and Williams are set to go at it again on November 20, and will hopefully showcase some of the magic of their previous meet, which was a candidate for ‘Fight of the Year’ in 2009. Williams inched by Martinez in a close decision, but many believe
Martinez was robbed. Now Martinez has the WBC and Ring Magazine Middleweight titles—something Williams vows to take.
“He's got something I want. He's got those belts on the table. I want those belts on the table. It's my job to go out there and get them,” Williams said.
Both Williams and Martinez make the cut for world’s best top pound-for-pound fighters. According to
Ring Magazine, Williams is listed as No.5, while Martinez comes in a close No.6. But many respected sources, like Dan Rafael, place them even higher on the list.
Dibella went over the stakes of the upcoming fight and said that, “This [upcoming] fight is not about revenge, it’s about putting a rubber stamp on things.”
Both Martinez and Williams are regularly avoided fighters because of these merits. Many believe that both Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather have avoided them, as they would present significant problems for the naturally smaller Pacquiao and the reserved
Mayweather.
Martinez himself was full of respect for his opponent. “Paul Williams is by far the most difficult fighter I’ve met. He’s the hardest puncher I’ve faced.”
