Question:

Loud Buzzing from Flourescent Fixture Driving me Nuts?

There are three long (72") flourescent fixtures in series in the kitchen ceiling. One has recently started buzzing - to distraction. I seem to remember from HS Science that there is a ballast somewhere. Can I fix the noise just by replacing the ballast? If so, where would I find it, they seem to be older sealed, single pin units, but with unusual "catches" on either end. I recently replaced two of the bulbs in the middle unit. It is the #3 unit that has become obnoxious. If I replace those bulbs any chance that will cure it?

Or will they have to "...come and take me away ha, ha - to the funny farm..." ;<)

Thanks!

  1. There may be a very easy fix to this without having to replace anything...Remove the bulbs, and the covering to get at the ballast. Often times, these are only installed with one s***w, with the other end in a slip fitting. You may be hearing a 60 cycle buzz, which is only vibration. Try anchoring the ballast by loosening the s***w, and wedge something behind . See if the noise stops. Good luck.

  2. The easiest thing to try would to be replace the last bulb with a new one. If that don't work the metal panel behind the bulbs needs to be removed. There are either screws or the panel is held in place by tabs. Sometimes you can press a release on the bulb sockets to get the old ballast wires out, if not you will have to splice and wire nut the new ballast in place. Make sure you change the right one by listening with the cover removed, but be careful around the energized light..

  3. FirstI would try the easiest option and relace the bulb/lamp, Its quite tricky to remove the ballast on some fittings and they are not that cheap in comparison to a new fitting.

If you replace it you are not guaranteed another part will not go wrong shortly.

Also whilst you are at it change the starter this will cost you pence, its a small white eletrical cylinder normally located at the end.

If you need any further assistance please give me a call.

  4. The ballast is underneath, you have to take the whole unit down. The ballast will be a large square piece on the underside.
