I have (2) issues with my Kenmore ColdSpot w/Ice maker refrigerator, Model # 7286-2100, Serial # EL3716365, manufactured 09/01. Fist of all the fridge makes a very loud banging noise when it shuts off. I've checked the compressor mounts & looked for any lose objects or anything touching the compressor. Can't find anything wrong. From what I've read about this problem I assume my compressor is going bad. The fridge was purchased in 01 and had been making this noise for about (3) years. Shortly after it's warranty expired (go figure). Also, it seem to be getting progressively louder. Any suggestions/fixes short of replacing the compressor and/or the fridge to fix this problem? My other issue is with the freezer drain. About 2 months ago I discovered water on the kitchen floor in front of the unit. When I removed the freezer floor, the entire freezer floor & drain were frozen. I used a hair dryer to thaw-out both the freezer floor & drain. I then took very hot soapy water (with use of flexible tubing left over from my ice maker installation) and poured it directly down the drain & verify it was open (thawed). The water ran into the drip pan. Thus I thought the problem was solved. Now, 2 months later, I have water in the bottom of the fridge again & the freezer drain is once again frozen. I just repeated the above fix & the fridge seems to be working ok. I've read about a Defrost Drain Strap Kit (part# 726493 for Whirlpool's available from ApplianceAid.com) to prevent this problem. Is this something that will work on my Kenmore, I think it's mfg'd by Whirlpool, all the parts listed begin with a 106, thus my fridge is a 106-7286-2100. If it will work, how difficult is it to install? Or should I check & replace the defrost timer (Kenmore part #2193084). I've read in some previous answers that suggest taking a wire & running down the drain tube. I haven't tried this for 2 reasons, 1) after I've thawed the drain plug & ran water thru the drain tune it pours down to the drip pan, thus appears to be clear of any obstruction, 2) it's difficult to get to, the drain tube is internal & clear in the back of the freezer below the evaporator coils. Finally, is it possible that the 2 problems are related & should just purchase a new fridge? If so, who do you recommend? I'm single thus my refrigeration usage is very low or at best moderate. I'll never purchase another Kenmore/Whirlpool so please don't recommend those. Thank You I suspect a drain pan tube problem. Water freezes under the slide out bottom shelf of the freezer so that the shelf won't slide out and drips periodically, every day or two, into the refrigerator under the freezer the the center back of the top space onto the shelves and into the bottom of the refrigerator. I cannot use the backs of the shelves because of water pooling there. I use wash clothes at strategic places so that I can catch the dripping water before it ruins things of the shelves and pools on the bottom then leaks onto the floor. It often turns to ice. The temp is correct for refrig and freezer. I have completely defrosted the freezer and removed all ice under the slide out shelf. I have disconnected the ice maker and turned off the water to the refrig. thinking that was the problem. There was no difference in the problem.
