Loud car exhaust inspection question?

i live in massachusetts...my friend told me his car failed a state inspection because his exhaust was too loud, but the sticker says it failed for safety. would a leaky or loud exhaust be considered a safety issue... if anyone knows what the mass state inspection requirements are please tell me

  1. An exhaust is loud because the exhaust system is rotted full of rust holes is a safety issue because that leaking exhaust is Carbon monoxide which is odorless and in all exhaust systems.  It could enter the car and poison the driver.    Also, rotted exhaust systems tend to fall off as you drive and become an obstacle on the road.

       Also, they may have a noise bylaw and his system is above legal limits.


  2. I wish they would have inspections like that around here. Every redneck and his sister has a 4x4 or Harley with a loud exhaust.

  3. There are limits on how loud your exhaust can be. You can tell the difference between leaky loud exhaust and illegal exhaust. They would both fall under the safety issue of the inspection.
