Question:

Loud static when turning on and changing stations on an old radio?

I have an older radio - a rather larger radio that has a TV band, and two world band selections, besides the AM and FM. It turns on by the volume k**b - when I turn it to on there is a loud crackle or static, and sometimes when I change stations. The volume is touchy - sometimes turns up slow with a slow turn, but more often than not it is high or low, unless I "juggle" the k**b. A friend told me that the tuner is dirty, and needs to be cleaned. Is this the case, and can I do it myself, or even with parts from a Radio Shack ?

  1. if you replaced parts for it, the price would probably be so high it wud be worthwhile to just buy a new one.

  2. Its probably not built for the Modern radio stations, have it tuned

  3. It needs cleaning on all buttons and k***s. A good stereo shop should be able to do it for you.

  4. FAULTY WIRING IN YOUR HOME...GET YOUR HOME REWIRED...GET NEW OUTLETS....THROW OUT THE FUSE, GET A CIRCUIT BREAKER...IMPROVE THE VOLTAGE...DECREASER THE WATTAGE. INTEL THE CURFRENT..ON A 20 VOLT CYCLE UND SPROCKET THE ULTRAVILOLET bulb. thenx

  5. Either dirty or cracked/loose connections. Get a can of contact cleaner, some q-tips, and start at the volume control pot. That's the best place to start.

  6. Fastest way is to keep playing with the k**b to clean it, which helps on some units that haven't been out of service for awile but usually as two have already stated, a good cleaning with electrical contact cleaner will work.. however by the sound of it the volume pot is dirty and with basically all of them sealed up, a  few shots inside the switch with the radio apart would be about the only fix

  7. Yes, you can get switch cleaner. It comes in an aerosol spray.

  8. Get a new radio.
