Question:

Loud whiney fan noise temporarily after starting 2001 olds intrigue?

When I start my car it makes a relitivly loud fan noise, today I noticed the fan noise has partnered with a labored whine. It goes away after a minute or two and occasionally kicks on while I am driving. My car is running without fault but I want to try to avoid any problems before they become problems. Any ideas what I might be looking at? Thanks

  1. check all of your drive pulleys for slack or bearing noise. and if you belt shows and signs of wear replace it. also try to duplicate the noise while looking under the hood.

  2. You need to check fan clutch it might be wearing out and wont do the correct job of cooling car down when motor gets hot

  3. The fan has a clutch on it so that at low speed the fan turns to draw air through the radiator, but at higher speeds thats not needed and wastes fuel so the clutch opens and the fan stops (and the fan noise stops) When you slow down or stop in traffic the clutch closes and the fan starts again until you get to the speed that the clutch opens again. The noise may be normal or perhaps the clutch is wearing out. With the motor stopped and the key OUT of the ignition, grasp the fan with both hands and try to rock it back and forth. If there is no noticeable movement then its fine, if however the fan rocks, the bearing is failing and a trip to your mechanic is needed. Special tools are required to change the clutch. The fact that you can hear it cutting in and out just means that its doing what it should be doing, albeit noisilly!
