Hi. Could you please tell me which of these options is the correct one?

The band plays _____________ than the one that was here last night.

a) more loudly

b) loudly

c) loudlier

d) more loud

According to what I know i think it should be "louder" but that answer is not there, so that makes me doubt.

Could anybody please explain this?

Thanks!!

P.S. I'm a Spanish speaker.

  1. i think its more louder

  2. I would say louder, but the next best answer more loudly.

  3. A) more loudly

"Loud" is an adjective which can only modify nouns. In this case, using an adverb "loudly" is the correct choice because it modifies the verb, "plays". Since you see the word "than" and are comparing two different bands then that is your indication to also use "more".

Even though "more loudly" is the correct choice, a lot of natural English speakers would have used "louder" in informal conversation.

  4. well it should be louder but if its not there then go for A

    good luck with your english

  5. louder.

  6. loudly

  7. more loudly , an adverb needed

  8. More loudly (I also thought louder though)

  9. A) More loudly

I have grown up speaking English and I majored in English in college. Please - just trust me!

  10. Buenos noches amiga!!! This one should be a) more loudly.

  11. A) but im not sure

  12. it is more loudly. louder is more commonly used, but it is not considered "proper english"

  13. More Loudly

    :-)

  14. Loudlier is NOT it

    Loudly is not it

I'm down to the last two and can't make up my mind, but I lean to

    more loudly

  15. ummmmmmm   play is a verb which needs an adverb..... loudly is an adverb...but it needs another adverb because it's comparing.... so the answer would be "more loudly"

  16. It's A, as louder is not really a word, it's improper. If something is getting more loud, it's getting more loudly in general.

  17. more loudly

    ......

  18. More loudly. An adverb is required, and of the answers given, (a) is the only correct one. However, since 'loud' can be either an adjective or an adverb, 'louder' would also be correct. It just doesn't happen to be given as a choice.

    loud

    A adjective

    1 loud

characterized by or producing sound of great volume or intensity; "a group of loud children"; "loud thunder"; "her voice was too loud"; "loud trombones"

    2 forte, loud

used chiefly as a direction or description in music; "the forte passages in the composition"

3 brassy, cheap, flash, flashy, garish, gaudy, gimcrack, loud, meretricious, tacky, tatty, tawdry, trashy

tastelessly showy; "a flash car"; "a flashy ring"; "garish colors"; "a gaudy costume"; "loud sport shirts"; "a meretricious yet stylish book"; "tawdry ornaments"

    B adverb

    1 loudly, loud, aloud

with relatively high volume; "the band played loudly"; "she spoke loudly and angrily"; "he spoke loud enough for those at the back of the room to hear him"; "cried aloud for help"

  19. More loudly.

  20. (  more loudly )   is the answer

If the sentence had been like this:

The band is _____ than the one that was here last night.

then the answer would be ( louder )

  21. a) more loudly

  22. It's more loudly.  I don't know how to explain it though.  Except that English has some weird rules that sometimes just can't be explained.  Loudlier is not a word so that takes out that one.  Loudly is just say they're playing loud, but not necessarily more so than the one last night.  I do not know why More loud is not right, however i do know that it's not.

  23. Sh*t, a?

  24. More Loudly.

Loud is describing how the band plays, which is a verb, so loud is used as an adverb "ly" is added to the end of the word to make in an adverb.

It is also used in comparison, so the word more is used.

    :)

  25. "More loudly" is the correct form

"Louder" is commonly used in conversation but is not strictly correct

  26. 1) Both "loud" and "loudly" can be used as adverbs. So, one of these options is certainly correct.

    2) "b" and "d" are surely incorrect, because you need a comparative adverb here, then "loudly" is not the answer. On the other hand, based on the English grammar, you add "-er" to adjectives/adverbs with ONE syllable, and "more" to the adj/adv. with more than one syllable. Then, "more loud" is not correct either.

    3) About "a" and "c", it is very tricky in the first look, but "a" is correct! WHY? Because although there is an exception to the rule I mentioned in my number (2): (the bi-syllabic words which end in "-y" get "-er" too. Other examples are: easiER, healthiER,...), LOUDLIER is not used in English at all. Maybe because of the "ly" that is added, and because it is not a part of the word.

On the whole, MORE LOUDLY is the correct answer!

  27. "...plays _______..."  Since plays is a verb, we need an adverb, a descriptive that modifies a verb.

That would be "more loudly".  Colloquially, one COULD say "plays louder" but it is not technically correct, since loud is an adjective ( a word that modifies a noun) not an adverb. To say that "the music is louder" would be correct. Quite confusing and subtle.  English is not an easy language like that.
