  1. The ear does not perceive sound linearly as the volume is increased or decreased.  As volume level decreases, the lowest and some of the higher frequencies appear to drop off sooner than mid frequencies.  Therefore loudness equalization was created to boost the high and low frequencies at lower volume levels.
