A great season for Montpellier should lead to qualification for the Champions League and the president is keen on retaining the likes of Younes Belhanda and Olivier Giroud for at least one more season
On top of the league with a three-point lead over Paris Saint-Germain, things couldn’t have been better for Montpellier Herault. A few nights back, Rene Girard’s side beat Olympique de Marseille 3-1 at the Stade Velodrome to go three points clear of PSG.
Though Montpellier are in one of the most exciting finales to the Championnat, for Louis Nicollin, qualification for the UEFA Champions League is more important. As things stand, Montpellier have a great chance of doing so.
However, their brilliant performances have not gone unnoticed. The likes of Younes Belhanda and Olivier Giroud have been attracting lot of interest from all directions and Nicollin is keen on retaining the duo for at least one more season.
Louis Nicollin feels that Belhanda is currently the best player in Ligue 1 and intends to keep him for next season.
“The biggest nugget is Belhanda. He is stronger than Hazard, Pastore and others. I think he’ll stay for us to do things right,” says the chairman of MHSC on RMC.
After being less confident about the future of Olivier Giroud, Nicollin has made it clear that he wants the striker to stay at the club for one more season.
The outspoken president feels that a season with Montpellier in the Champions League would help the striker a lot as he will then be able to earn a better move in the future.
“He’s a clever boy. One more season at Montpellier, especially in the Champions League, I think it will not stop him from earning a lot of money later. He has a good attitude. He is truly remarkable.”
Suffice to say that Montpellier will do everything to make the two jewels stay at the club.
