Louis Oosthuizen opts out of Andalucia Open 2011 due to eye infection – Golf news
The conqueror of St Andrews and winner of the South African Open, Louis Oosthuizen will not defend his Andalucia Open 2011 title in Malaga, owing to an eye infection.
The 28-year-old golfer pulled out of the €1,000,000 European Tour event, which will kick off on 24 March, 2011 at the Parador Golf Club. The event is sponsored by the Turkish Airlines, but Oosthuizen is not ready to risk his health
and take part in one of the flagship events on the Tour.
The South African told the press, “It's very disappointing, but I can't risk making the problems worse.”
Oosthuizen contracted a virus infection in Miami where he flew to compete for the WGC-Cadillac Championship title. The infection made his vision blurred and restricted him from playing further in the tournament. The player was registered
for the event, but pulled out at the last minute when his doctors advised him not to play.
The South African added that his doctors wanted him to take a complete bed rest, as the infection had spread in his mouth as well.
Oosthuizen has had a number of health issues since 2010. In that year, he broke his ankle while on a hunting expedition in his homeland. The broken ankle forced him to pull out of Dunhill Links Championship and the Professional Golfers
Association Grand Slam.
The world number 24 told the press that he was waiting for the tournament impatiently, as it was a win at Malaga that rocketed him into a superb form.
He carried the same form to Augusta National, where the Masters took place and to St Andrews, where he triumphed. Oosthuizen is disappointed about pulling out of the tournament, but he is positive of returning to the course at the
Shell Houston Open, which will take place next week. The event will gear him up for the Masters, which is the first major championship of the 2011 season.
Oosthuizen is on a one-week bed rest, but is determined to make a comeback with a fresher mind and a stronger body to lift the season’s first trophy of the PGA Tour.
