Louis Oosthuizen says he cannot shrug the painful memories of Masters heading for Maybank Malaysian Open
Louis Oosthuizen may have landed in Malaysia for his latest bid, the Maybank Malaysian Open, but the 29-year-old South African just cannot get over with the fact that he came so close to landing the coveted Masters last week.
The 2010 Open champion had almost won his second major title of his career but blew his chances when he bogeyed the second playoff hole at Augusta National.
The dejected Oosthuizen confided that the loss continuously ripped through his brain during his long flight to East Asia.
He said, "Probably every second on the flight I thought about it. I don’t think there is much I would have done differently. I gave it my all. I played the best I could coming down the stretch and was outplayed".
And there is little doubt that Oosthuizen played the career best golf on the sprawling Augusta National but eventually it turned out to be a matter of luck when Bubba Watson snatched the green jacket on the second Playoff.
He added, "It’s a good and bad thing: being that close to the green jacket is tough to get over immediately but I think time will heal it and it gives me a bit more confidence to get myself one. I suppose the day I eventually put one on is the day I will get over it fully".
Oosthuizen came from behind on the final day of the event, pulling a three-under, 69 to settle for a playoff with Watson.
Earlier in the day, the sturdy South African had pulled in a historic double eagle, demonstrating his excellent control on his trade.
Oosthuizen with his strong runner up finish has now climbed to number 19 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and will be hoping to continue with his blistering form for the rest of the season.
Winner of nine professional titles in his grizzled career, Oosthuizen is rated as the top golfers from South Africa alongside Schwartzel.
He turned professional in the year 2002 and has made four appearances in the coveted Masters. He missed the halfway cut in all the three previous attempts to bag the elusive title.
