Louis Oosthuizen start his 2012 campaign with a victory at the Volvo Golf Champions
Louis Oosthuizen made a remarkable start to his 2013 golf campaign by recording a victory in the Volvo Golf Champions, also known as the ‘tournament of champions’ of the European Tour, on Sunday, January 14, 2013.
The tournament was being staged at the Durban Country Club, featuring only the winners from the 2012 European Tour season and the past winners with 10 or more victories registered to their resumes.
Entering the final round, he was sharing the second spot on the leaderboard and was trailing the overnight leader Scott Jamieson by five strokes.
Meanwhile, when Jamieson failed to break the par mark, Oosthuizen stunned the field by firing a six-under par 66 in the final round, to surge to the top of the leaderboard.
He got off to a brilliant start by carding birdies on four of the first eight holes that he played. The back nine of the course also witnessed him playing decent shots, which earned him three birdies against a lone bogey.
At the end of the day, he found himself settled one stroke ahead of Jamieson, with a 16-under par tournament score. It was Oosthuizen’s sixth European Tour victory, which elevated him to the fourth position in the Official World Golf Rankings, the highest
in his career.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure in marking a great start to his campaign in 2012. According him, his consistent display of the game was the main factor behind his success in the tournament.
It was a great week - a lot of things happened," he said. “It's a great start [to the year], I knew I had to come out and get my name up there. After being five down, to make it up after 12 holes, I was really chuffed about that. I just played really well
all day”.
Jamieson was a little disappointed with the way he finished his campaign at the Durban Country Club. In the meantime, he praised the way Oosthuizen played in the final round to take home the prestigious title.
“Louis's a Major Champion - there's no shame in losing to him,” said the World Number 100. “I gave it my all, but it wasn't to be”.
