Louis Oosthuizen wins Maybank Malaysian Open – Golf News
Louis Oosthuizen hits back strongly after a miserable defeat at the Masters by winning the Maybank Malaysian Open, at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club on Sunday, April 15, 2012.
The former British Open champion, who missed his second major title chance at the Augusta National after losing to Bubba Watson on the second playoff hole, carded a 17-under par tournament score to take a three-stroke victory over Stephen Gallacher.
While entering the final round, he had only a one-stroke lead over Gallacher. However, five birdies and a bogey took him way ahead of his rivals.
"I was a little surprised to win here after that," Oosthuizen said. "I thought I would be a lot more tired. My golf was a bit up and down in the morning at the end of the third round, but I settled down and played well later".
Gallacher had a flawless round. Yet, he only managed to score two birdies, which were not enough to challenge the South African on top of the leaderboard.
"I knew I just needed to get two ahead and just attack it a little bit more and then I made another good one on 16," Oosthuizen talked about his birdies on the 13th and 16th hole.
On the other hand, Gallacher also looked pleased with his performance as he carded only two bogeys throughout the tournament.
He said that he should have registered a better score in the final round. Yet, he believes his performance was up to the mark and he feels proud of that.
Apart from his own performance, he commented about Oosthuizen's by saying that he was expecting him to get tired by the final round. However, he kept on playing well and registered a well deserved victory.
“Fair play to him - he played great," The 37-year-old said.
Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Danny Willett and David Lipsky were tied for the third position after recording 12-under par overall scores.
Matteo Manassero, the defending champion, mixed five birdies and an amazing eagle with four bogeys in the final round to tie for the seventh position on the leaderboard.
