Louis Oosthuizen’s Albatross proves to be unlucky for him at the Masters – Golf News
The South African Louis Oosthuizen recorded his first ever double eagle in the history of the Masters Tournament on the par-five second hole on Sunday, April 8, 2012.
Overall, the double eagle from Oosthuizen was the fourth in the history of the Masters Tournament. The most recent was recorded by Jeff Maggert, who double eagled on the 13th hole in the 1994 Masters Tournament.
Oosthuizen played his second shot with the help of a 4-iron from 254 yards. He used the slope on the green by landing the ball at the edge of it.
The angle was so perfect that the ball rolled across the green after it hit the ground to find the hole.
It was the first ever albatross scored by Oosthuizen in his career. However, it did not prove to be very lucky for him at the end, as he lost to Bubba Watson on the second playoff hole.
According to Oosthuizen, the albatross slowed him down afterwards and he was unable to convert the birdies even if he had many chances. He had to wait for the 13th hole for his first birdie of the round.
“You know, it was tough after that double eagle,” Oosthuizen said. “I mean, you know, when something like that happens early in your round, you think that this is it. That was my first double eagle ever”.
“So it was tough. It was tough the next five holes to just get my head around it and just play the course. But I felt like I found my rhythm going down 11, and you know, played well in from there,” he added.
Oosthuizen and Watson parred the first playoff hole and played awkward tee shots. Watson’s ball found the trees and Oosthuizen went for the rough.
That was a time when Oosthuizen looked in a far better position. However, Watson’s beautiful shot between the trees found the green and Oosthuizen fell just short of it.
Thereafter, Oosthuizen made three shots to make the ball find the hole. Therefore, Watson had the chance of two putts in order to record a win in the Masters.
Watson successfully two-putted to record his first major title win ever in his career.
