Biggest land scam of all time.  The French claimed it (as though the native Americans living on it for the past 20,000 years or so had no right to it) then sold it to Jefferson, when all he had to do was move in.  

What could they do about it if he had?

We wanted New Orleans but the idea of not having any other nation on our backyard was very appealing to Jefferson.

Napoleon needed money to fight England. It was a win win situation.

are you serious? They wanted land! and TONS of it- one of the absolutely largest land purchases in history- the french sold it cheap too.... cheaper than a flat in New York (per acre). It is essentially all the central america and more. Jefferson bought it because he didnt want france and spain to have any control in america and this made it much easier for trade.
