Lourdes Dominguez-Lino dispatches Laura Robson in the second round – China Open 2012
World number 64, Lourdes Dominguez-Lino, ended the run of the 60th ranked Briton, Laura Robson, in the second round of the China Open on Tuesday. She dispatched the 18-year-old superstar in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.
Robson never settled into the atmosphere of the contest and kept on making silly unforced errors. It was more like the number one Briton beating herself than her opponent. The 64th ranked Spaniard utilized the power
of the left-handed rival’s return against her and kept on playing that back-hand slices that lured the 18-year-old in over hitting the ball on most of the occurrences.
No breakthrough was witnessed for the first 10 games of the match. There was absolutely no scare for any of the two contestants as they easily bagged their serve games. Not a single deuce was contested for the first 10 games but
the lightning struck in the following game; when out of nowhere, the 60th ranked British qualifier made three back-to-back unforced errors and witnessed a mind-startling winner in the following rally from her opponent.
Lino was under the cosh in the following game but did well to restrict her competitor and hold serve. It was a stunning ending to the opening set and the victim had no one to blame but herself. The second set witnessed a serve
hold at both ends before the similar tragedy like the first set happened to Robson. She failed to win a single point on her serve courtesy the unforced errors and allowed the Spanish qualifier to run away with the show.
Lino held her serve to push the lead further. She tested her opponent in the following game as well but wasn’t lucky to sneak another breakpoint. On the other hand, she saved a breakpoint to keep the lead intact. A swap of breakpoints
coupled with another breakthrough for the Spanish qualifier ended the match in her favour. It was a terrible ending to another promising start from the number one Briton who is thought to be the future of Great Britain’s tennis.
Lino will either face Shuai Zhang or Agnieszka Radwanska depending on whoever wins the second round contest.
