Lourdes Dominguez Lino downs Arantxa Parra Santonja in the second round – Swedish Open 2011
World number 45, Lourdes Dominguez Lino booked her place in the quarterfinal of Collector Swedish Open 2011 after a convincing straight sets victory over a disappointing Arantxa Parra Santonja, who went off balance as soon she
lost his opener.
Santonja, who is ranked 119thin WTA (Women Tennis Association) rankings list, could not mount a sustained attack against her high quality opponent, losing the match with a 7-5, 6-1 score.
Fourth-seeded Dominguez looked persistent, served extremely well and generated the right kind balance of attack to secure the match in just one hour and eighteen minutes.
Santonja’s hefty and authoritative ground game looked goalless and messy against the fourth-seeded and she was no better in this match with Dominguez. It seemed that lower ranked Spaniard had lost trust in her shots and looked
petrified to go for her two-handed backhands, which is arguably Santonja’s most dangerous shot.
The first set of the match was comparatively tougher than the second one, although both were easy wins for the 30-year-old, Dominguez. Although Santonja thumped two aces in the show, she remained restricted to save five of eight
break points during the whole match. She absolutely seemed exhausted and did not display any resistance which could disrupt the Spaniard from winning the opener with seven games to five.
Dominguez had an amazing command over her racquet, making her opponent suffered like an ill-equipped amateur. The talented Spaniard was up to snuff and did not allow her inadequate opponent to pull pranks on her as she scored 59
percent of points on her service, 46 percent of points on return and 52 percent of point in total. The Spaniard had full control over match and though she was not at her very best form-wise, Santonja’s poor display of tennis still allowed her to win the opener
with a difference of 4 percent in total.
A disheartening defeat in the opener brought worry to Santonja and her fans saw a sudden downfall in her game. Dominguez made heavenly use of her cross-court angle backhand and was virtually untouched on her first serve, winning
10 of 11 first serve points in the decider.
Dominguez broke a fading Santonja not once but twice in a runaway second set. Breaking Santonja had always been a bugaboo for Dominguez in the past and today, Dominguez is at perfect 2-1 in their head-to-head series.
She now moves on into the quarterfinals of the tournament where he will meet Johanna Larsson of Sweden for the second time in her career, leading the head-to-head score to 1-0.
