Lourdes Dominguez Lino downs Valeria Savinykh to reach quarters – Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2012
The Spanish star, Lourdes Dominguez Lino, tumbled over the Russian starlet, Valeria Savinykh, in straight sets at the Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2012 on Wednesday. She clobbered a 6-4, 6-2 score line over the 21-year-old to book a spot in the final eight at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event taking place on the hard courts in Monterrey, Mexico.
The 30-year-old brought her experience into handy and ousted Savinykh in an hour and 22-minutes long marathon. She not only booked a place in the last eight but also took the lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the Russian.
Ranked 112th in the WTA rankings, Lino made a shaky entry at the Sierra Madre Tennis Club and lost her serve in the opening game. However, she made a fitting reply and not only snatched her break back but capitalised on another break chance in the sixth game to go 4-2 up. Regardless of losing her serve again in the following game, the Spaniard stroke out the last two games and clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Lino kept her rhythm in the proceeding set and after earning the coveted break in the second game, she leaped to 2-0. The veteran then remained focused in the remaining set and after exchanging two breaks of serve, she extended her lead to 4-2. The Spaniard then broke Savinykh’s serve for the fourth time and sealed the set by winning six games to two.
All in all, the eighth seed produced almost an equal first serve share of 68 percent and impressively clicked 23 out of 36 points on it. Lino brushed off six out of 10 breakpoints she came across and converted seven out of 13 break opportunities to her advantage. In the end, the beaming Spaniard finished the match with 62 points as opposed to Savinykh’s 45.
Next challenge for the high flying Spaniard is the Romanian contestant, Alexandra Cadantu, who fended off early resistance to defeat Silvia Soler-Espinosa. The Romanian cashed in both break chances in the second set to seal the deal with a 7-6(6), 6-3 success in almost two hours.
