Lourdes Dominguez-Lino overpowers Sacha Jones in the final qualifier – Swedish Open 2012
World number 74, Lourdes Dominguez-Lino, trashed the 173rd ranked Aussie, Sacha Jones, in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-2 to reach the main round of the Sony Swedish Open on Monday.
Lino commenced the match as the hot favourite being the top seed in the qualifying draws and lived up to the expectations; triumphing over the 21-year-old Aussie in an hour and 53 minutes.
Both players commenced the match with a swap of breakpoints before holding their respective serves to move the scores at 2-2.
Jones was aggressive at the start and broke serve for the second time in the set to take a lead of 3-2. She held her serve and consolidated her position; sent a strong message to her rival that she was out there to perform.
The following three games were held by the players serving and the scores moved to 5-4 in favour of Jones. She looked set to take the first set but out of nowhere the Spaniard managed to break serve after an intense battle and
levelled the scores at 5-5.
A serve hold at both ends enforced the tie-breaker round and with little doubt the Spaniard took the first set under the nose of her rival.
The second set was truly dominated by the Spanish professional who broke serve twice on the trot to take a resounding lead of 4-0 at the start. She didn’t make mistakes on her serve and that was the good thing about Lino who struggled
to hold serve in the opening set.
An exchange of breakthroughs kept the scores together. Jones was the first to break serve and that allowed her to bring the trail down to two games but her rival was just too good and the reverse breakthrough in the seventh game
reinstated the lead for Lino.
Lino held serve to 40:15 and bounced into the opening round of the contest after a successful qualifying round of play. It will be interesting to see who will be her next opponent. The probable players to face her includes the
Israeli star, Shahar Peer, local wildcard entrant, Sandra Roma, the Ukrainian starlet, Kateryna Bondarenko and the sixth seed Czech, Klara Zakopalova.
