Lourdes Lino destroys Romina Oprandi; moves into the second round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino bombarded groundstrokes to slaughter Italian Romina Oprandi losing only a single game in the process. She barely sweated and registered a bagel and a breadstick to advance into the second round of
the Wimbledon Championships 2011, a major grass court tournament held in London, England on Tuesday.
Lino took just forty-nine minutes to swallow Oprandi with an amazing 6-0, 6-1 score line at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. She last duel the Italian at Cuneo ITF where she was defeated with a bagel and a breadstick.
Now, after a whole year, the Spaniard took revenge by defeating Oprandi with a similar score line in their fourth meeting.
Ranked 48th in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, Lino raged into the opening set as she unleashed barrage of groundstrokes to reel off all six games in a row to earn a bagel in just twenty-three minutes. The Spaniard
clobbered a similar first serve share of 62 percent but registered a spectacular 85 percent win on it. She never faced any threat by the Italian and converted three out of five breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
30-years-old Spaniard lowered her stats in the following set as she produced a lower first serve share of 48 percent as opposed to Oprandi’s 70 percent and lost one game. However, Lino hammered fifteen winners, committed fewer
unforced errors and converted both breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to bag a breadstick in twenty-six minutes.
The Barcelona resident, Lino had a disastrous season so far. However, she re-ignited her spark in February when she won the title at Bogota and made a quarter-final berth at Acapulco. She exited from the opening round at French
Open but re-focused her strategy in this Grand Slam as she crushed Oprandi in her opening round match.
25-year-old Italian on the other hand had a terrible start of the season as fell to a seven match losing streak. However, she raised her form before at s-Hertogenbosch where she made a semi-final berth before entering this major
WTA tournament.
Up next for the Spaniard is the ninth seeded French Marion Bartoli who trashed Czech qualifier Kristyna Pliskova with a bagel to reach this spot.
26-year-old Frenchwoman faced zero breakpoint and converted five out of seven breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to seal the deal with a 6-0, 6-2 score line.
She outshined Pliskova completely as she produced a much better first serve share of 72 percent as compared to Czech’s 51 percent and registered a fantastic 82 percent win on it. Bartoli spiced the match further by hitting five
aces and hammering seventeen winners.
