Question:

Lovebird a good bird for a University Student?

So I've already asked a question related to this, however I've done more research and narrowed my choices down a bit.

I'm thinking of maybe purchasing a lovebird. I have just graduated high school and I'm registered for university in the fall. Each weekday, I'll be gone at school about half the day, but I'll be home on weekends and during my four month summer, plus I'm sure I can dedicate about a couple of hours a day to the bird. I'm looking for a relatively quiet bird. I don't mind chirps, but I'd like it to squawk as little as possible. Basically, whatever makes a good apartment bird.

Is a lovebird right for me? Are there any other pet bird recommendations?

  1. I had lovebirds in the past and they are loud screamers. You as a university student will require quietness for homework and studying. Lovebirds are not for you!! Instead go with a female cockatiel where they are pretty much quiet with a little chirping here and there. Male cockatiels are noisey as they whistle and chatter non stop in search of a female. A cockatiel can cost $45-100 depending on colour/mutation. Checkout this site www.kijiji.com for a cockatiel/lovebird breeder in your hometown. You can also find used cages in excellent condition at a low price.

  2. Perfect! They can be such sweet loving birds and they are relatively quiet compared to others. Price is good, time you're available is good.

As far as other birds, I'd recommend a Pionus. They're a lot more expensive, however they are also very calm birds that can handle a little more time alone. They'd be fine in an apartment. Both would. :]

    Edit: Regarding Cockatiels:

I've owned large birds and cockatiels have out-screeched them. The love birds I've had were by far much quieter!
